Why a Card Deposit is Declined
A declined card deposit is almost always a decision by your bank, not by CasinOnline. South African issuers block gambling spending for a few common reasons, and there are checks on whose name is on the card. Here are the usual causes and what to do about each.
The gambling block and name-match rule
Many South African banks block the gambling category (MCC 7995) outright or by default. The issuer auto-declines the transaction regardless of how much money is in your account, and credit cards are blocked more often than debit cards. Some banks let you opt in or lift a gambling block in their app first. Capitec blocks gambling on standard cards, so use Capitec Pay instead.
The other common block is name-match: the cardholder name must match your CasinOnline account holder. You generally cannot deposit with someone else's card — mismatches are refused and can flag your account at withdrawal or KYC. If your card keeps refusing, an instant EFT deposit usually goes through where a card will not.
Amex and other declines
American Express is accepted at far fewer South African sites than Visa or Mastercard. Business and corporate Amex cards are often excluded, and some issuers block gaming on Amex entirely. Treat Amex as best-effort and keep a Visa or Mastercard as your primary option. Confirm which cards are live in the cashier before relying on one.
If none of the above applies and the card still refuses, the decline is on your bank's side. Call your bank to ask whether gambling is blocked on the card, or switch to a method that does not run on the card rails, such as Apple Pay from a different card or instant EFT.
