Blackjack Guide
Blackjack is the casino card game where you play against the dealer, not the other players. Your goal is simple to state and tricky to master: build a hand worth more than the dealer's without going over 21. Played well, blackjack carries one of the lowest house edges on the casino floor, which is exactly why it rewards players who understand the rules and the maths behind them.

The goal: beat the dealer without busting
Every blackjack hand is a contest between you and the dealer. You both aim to get as close to 21 as possible. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value, picture cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, and an Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand. Go over 21 and you bust, losing your stake immediately, no matter what the dealer does afterwards. That single rule, that you can lose before the dealer even plays, is the heart of the game's house edge.
How a round works
You place a bet in rand, then you and the dealer each receive two cards. Your cards are usually face up; the dealer typically shows one card and keeps one hidden. You then decide how to play your hand, hitting for more cards or standing on what you have. Once you are done, the dealer reveals their hidden card and plays by fixed rules. Closest to 21 wins; a tie returns your stake. Our How to Play Blackjack guide walks through every option in detail.
Why blackjack rewards skill
Unlike a slot or a roulette spin, your decisions in blackjack directly change the odds. With correct basic strategy, the house edge drops to roughly 0.5%, among the lowest in any casino game. That edge never disappears entirely, and no system guarantees a profit, but it means a thoughtful player gives back far less over time than a guessing one. Frequently asked questions
Is blackjack a game of luck or skill?
Both. The cards you are dealt are luck, but how you play them is skill. Good decisions measurably lower the house edge, which is why blackjack rewards learning the strategy. It is still a game with a built-in edge for the casino, so play within your limits and never bet money you cannot afford to lose.
What is the house edge in blackjack?
With correct basic strategy on standard rules, the house edge is around 0.5%, one of the lowest in the casino. Poor decisions and unfavourable table rules push it higher. The edge is always present, so blackjack should be played for entertainment, not as a way to make money.
Do I need to be good at maths to play?
No. You can learn a basic strategy chart that tells you the best move for every hand, so the maths is already done for you. Understanding why those moves are correct helps, but you can start playing sensibly straight away. Players must be 18 or older.
