Blackjack Basic Strategy
Basic strategy is the single most valuable thing you can learn in blackjack. It is a set of mathematically proven decisions, the best move for every possible hand against every dealer upcard, worked out by analysing millions of simulated rounds. Use it consistently and you play blackjack about as well as it can be played.
What basic strategy is
For any combination of your hand and the dealer's visible card, there is one decision, hit, stand, double or split, that gives you the best long-run result. Basic strategy is simply the complete list of those best decisions. It is not a betting system or a trick; it is the optimal way to play each hand, derived from the fixed odds of the game. Following it removes guesswork and the costly mistakes that come with playing on instinct.
How a strategy chart works
A strategy chart is a grid. Your hand runs down one side, the dealer's upcard runs along the top, and each cell tells you the correct move. To use it you find the row for your total, then the column for the dealer's card, and read off the action. Charts are split by hand type, hard totals, soft totals (those containing an Ace counted as 11) and pairs, because the right play differs for each. With a little practice the common decisions become second nature.
It reduces the edge but never removes it
Playing perfect basic strategy cuts the house edge to roughly 0.5% on standard rules, far better than guessing, but it does not eliminate the edge or guarantee a winning session. The casino still holds a small mathematical advantage on every hand. Using a chart is completely allowed at the table; it is just optimal play, not cheating, and many casinos sell the cards in their gift shops. Frequently asked questions
Is using a basic strategy chart allowed?
Yes. Basic strategy is just the mathematically best way to play each hand, and using a chart is completely permitted. It is not cheating and does not require hiding anything. It simply helps you avoid mistakes, though the casino still keeps a small edge on every hand.
Does basic strategy guarantee I will win?
No. Basic strategy lowers the house edge to around 0.5%, but it cannot remove it, and the casino still holds a mathematical advantage. You will still have losing sessions. No strategy or betting system guarantees a profit, so play for entertainment and within your limits.
Do I have to memorise the whole chart?
Not at once. Most players learn the common situations first and keep a chart handy for the rest. Over time the frequent decisions become automatic. Starting with the basics already improves your play noticeably compared with relying on guesswork. Players must be 18 or older.
