The Route — Il Lombardia
Il Lombardia is the long, mountainous Italian classic run in the autumn through the hills around Lake Como. The route is genuine climbing terrain, not a day of punchy bergs, and that single fact does more to shape the betting than anything else. Knowing the parcours tells you which kind of rider can win and which names are window-dressing on the odds sheet.
The parcours
Run in October, Il Lombardia covers a long, climbing-heavy course through the lakeside hills of Lombardy, typically finishing in Como (the start city and exact distance vary year to year). The signature ascent is the Madonna del Ghisallo — a twisting climb of roughly 8.6km with ramps into double digits, crowned by the famous chapel dedicated to the patron saint of cyclists, a place of genuine pilgrimage in the sport. Later, and more decisive for the result, comes the Civiglio: short but brutal, around 4km averaging near 10% with a section at 14%, sitting close enough to Como that it regularly launches the winning move. The short, sharp San Fermo della Battaglia often follows before a fast run-in to the lakefront. This is real mountain terrain that asks for sustained climbing power, not a one-punch effort.

What the route means for betting
The parcours rewards climbers and GC-style riders — men who can absorb a long day of vertical metres and still produce a hard effort on the Civiglio. Pure sprinters and one-day cobbled specialists are nowhere here; the climbs simply remove them. That makes the contender list shorter and, on paper, easier to read than a flatter classic. Where it gets tricky is form, which we cover in the race winner guide. Contrast this with the season's opening Monument, the long-but-flatter Milan-San Remo, where a sprinter can survive — Lombardia is the opposite end of the spectrum. Frequently asked questions
What are the key climbs in Il Lombardia?
The Madonna del Ghisallo, with its hilltop chapel to the patron saint of cyclists, is the iconic ascent, but the steep Civiglio near Como is usually where the winning move goes. The exact selection of climbs varies by edition, so check the published route each year.
Why does the route favour climbers?
Il Lombardia is a long day with a lot of climbing, finishing on steep ascents around Lake Como. Sprinters and flat-classic specialists get dropped, leaving climbers and stage-race riders to contest the win. That narrows the realistic field of contenders.
