Giro d'Italia Overall Winner

The maglia rosa — the pink jersey — goes to the Giro d'Italia general classification winner, the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all three weeks. It is the headline outright of the race and the market most punters start with. Prices are fixed-odds, settled in rand once the GC is official.

How the general classification works

The GC is decided on total elapsed time: every rider's daily times are added up, and the lowest aggregate after the final stage wins the maglia rosa. Time bonuses at stage finishes and intermediate sprints shave a few seconds here and there, but the real gaps open on the summit finishes and in the time trials. That is why GC betting rewards two profiles: the pure climber who takes huge chunks of time uphill, and the complete GC rider who climbs well enough and then limits or recovers losses against the clock. On a mountain-heavy, time-trial-light route the climber is favoured; add time-trial kilometres and the all-rounder's price shortens.

Because the decisive terrain comes late, an early race leader is rarely the one wearing pink in the final week. Read the route before you read the prices, and use our Cycling betting guide for the basics of staking an outright.

Reading the price, each-way and podium value

The outright price is the book's read of win probability — favourites are short for a reason, but the Giro is famously less predictable than the Tour de France. Bad weather, brutal climbs and riders using the race as Tour preparation mean favourites are beaten more often here, which pushes the longer prices into value more frequently than at other grand tours. That makes each-way and dedicated podium (top-three) markets worth a hard look: backing a credible climber to make the podium can pay when the outright is a coin-flip between three or four names.

Keep one thing clear — the maglia rosa is only the GC. The points (maglia ciclamino), mountains (maglia azzurra) and young rider (maglia bianca) classifications are separate markets with their own logic, and a rider can win one without troubling the overall. Frequently asked questions

What is the maglia rosa?

The maglia rosa is the pink jersey worn by the Giro d'Italia general classification leader and awarded to the overall winner. It goes to the rider with the lowest cumulative time across the whole race.

Is each-way good value on the Giro overall winner?

It often is. Giro favourites are beaten more frequently than Tour de France favourites because of weather, severe climbing and riders treating it as preparation, so longer-priced contenders reach the podium more often. Always check the each-way terms and current prices at the sportsbook before betting.
