Basketball Point Spread Betting
The point spread is basketball's signature market. Instead of just picking a winner, you back a team against a points handicap set to make a lopsided game an even bet. Here is how it works and how to read it.
How the points handicap works
The spread is a handicap in points. The favourite is given a deficit it must overcome — say -7.5 — so it has to win by eight or more for the bet to pay. The underdog gets the matching head start, +7.5, so it pays if it wins outright or loses by seven or fewer. The line is set so both sides sit close to even money, which is why a mismatch on the money line becomes a genuine contest on the spread.
Reading the line
A half-point in the line (the 'hook') removes the chance of a tie, so there is always a winner and a loser on the bet. Sharp bettors weigh injuries, rest, pace and recent form against the number rather than just backing the better team. If picking a winner suits you better, the money line is simpler; if you would rather bet the scoring, see the over/under. Step back to the basketball betting page for the full market list.
Frequently asked questions
What does -7.5 mean on a basketball spread?
The favourite must win by eight or more points for a bet on them to pay. The underdog at +7.5 pays if it wins outright or loses by seven or fewer. The half-point means there is no tie.
Why bet the point spread instead of the money line?
On a one-sided game the money line favourite is priced very short. The spread gives the underdog a points head start and the favourite a deficit, so both sides sit near even money and the bet has more value.
