Three Card Poker Bets & Odds
Knowing the payouts and the real house edge is what separates a clued-up player from a hopeful one. Here are the three-card hand rankings, the dealer-qualify rule, and an honest look at the edge on both the Ante-Play game and the Pair Plus side bet. Good strategy lowers the edge — it never removes it, and no betting system guarantees a profit.
Hand rankings (straight beats flush)
From highest to lowest: Straight flush, Three of a kind, Straight, Flush, Pair, then High card. The key thing to notice is that the straight outranks the flush — the opposite of five-card poker. With only three cards, three to a straight are harder to make than three to a flush, so the straight is the more valuable hand. Misremembering this order is the most common beginner mistake.
Payouts and the dealer-qualify rule
If the dealer does not reach Queen-high or better, they fail to qualify: your Ante pays even money and your Play bet is returned. If they qualify and you win, both your Ante and Play bets pay even money. The Ante bonus pays extra for premium hands — commonly 1 to 1 for a straight, 4 to 1 for three of a kind and 5 to 1 for a straight flush — and it pays regardless of the dealer. Pair Plus pays on a sliding scale, with bigger multiples for rarer hands like three of a kind and straight flush. Exact pay tables vary, so always check the table you are at.
The honest house edge
Played with correct strategy, the Ante-Play game carries a house edge of roughly 3.4% of your Ante (about 2% when measured against your total Ante-plus-Play stake). Pair Plus typically runs a higher edge, often around 7.3% depending on the pay table. Neither edge can be wiped out — strategy only keeps you near the lower figure. Over time the house holds its margin, which is why this is entertainment, not income. Learn the one decision rule in our Three Card Poker strategy guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does a flush really lose to a straight here?
Yes. In Three Card Poker a straight beats a flush, because with three cards a straight is the rarer hand. It feels backwards if you know five-card poker, but it is correct and applies to both your hand and the dealer's.
Which bet has the lower house edge?
The Ante-Play game has the lower edge, at roughly 3.4% of your Ante with correct strategy. Pair Plus is more volatile and usually carries a higher edge, often around 7.3%. Neither can be eliminated, and no system changes the long-run maths.
Can good play guarantee I come out ahead?
No. Correct strategy keeps the house edge as low as possible, but the edge never reaches zero, so the casino retains its advantage over time. Any claim of guaranteed wins or a system that beats the game is false. Play 18+ and within your limits.
